Things to do

Our welcome folder, which you will find in the living area upon arrival, contains information on a range of different activities, places to visit and places to eat and drink. The following is merely a taster.

Eating and Drinking- Despite its rural location, Elsdon boasts several places to eat and drink;

In the nearby village of Otterburn, the Otterburn Castle Hotel serves meals throughout the day. Staples, fruit and vegetables can also be bought at the Border Reiver village store and George Jennings’ Fruit and Veg, both in Otterburn.

Places to visit – We are lucky to have two national trust properties within a half hour drive; Wallington and Cragside together with Kirkharle Courtyard (home of Capability Brown) with its tea room and boutique shops and the English Heritage owned Belsay Castle. It is approximately half an hour to Hadrian’s Wall, and 45 minutes to Alnwick Garden and Alnwick Castle. The beautiful Northumberland Coast line is only an hour away. We would also recommend a visit to the Farne Islands if the weather is good

Walking and cycling – Sitting within the beautiful Northumberland National Park Elsdon provides an excellent base for walkers – a wealth of suggestions for short, medium and longer walks is available on the National Park website. A number of cycle routes run through the National Park, and through the nearby Kielder Water and Forest Park. Bikes can be hired at Kielder and in Rothbury. More information on the services we offer for cyclists and walkers is available on our cycling and walking page

Indoor Activities – Even if the weather is less than perfect there is much to entertain old and young alike in Hexham, Morpeth, Alnwick or Newcastle; whether that be shopping, eating and drinking, swimming, ten pin bowling or the cinema. All are within easy driving distance

We also have some of the darkest skies in England, great for seeing stars as this video from the National Park shows to great effect. A planisphere is provided in the cottage to help you navigate the night sky.
